The difference between the ink-jet printer and the dye sublimation
The dye sublimation printers use a ribbon that can print at 5760 x 1440 dpi, and can print 16.77 million different colors. It can also print 256 colors on one dot with a square resolution. That means the color is the same on both sides. The ink-jet does not have this capability.
They are fundamentally different right down to the very colors they use! Sublimation printer is a type of thermal transfer printer. This involved the design to be printed on a sheet (substrate) the ink employed here are Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and overcoat. The pigmentation used are different from inkjet printers as these colors are required to be fused with the material of which it is going to be sublimated with.
The chief principle here is heat. The print head generates heat and this is applied on the ink sheet that was specifically prepared earlier with special pigments. Upon application of heat, the ink on the sheet gets vaporized and sticks to the material (usually clothes) since the heat used is controlled, print density can be modified to a minuscule level. With this, smooth gradations can be achieved. This process is called sublimation as the solid present here is directly converted to gas without being in a liquid state.
Inkjet printers on the other hand print by spraying small droplets of ink pigments on a sheet of paper. This is a controlled action and by varying the amount of ink sprayed from each color cartridge, dynamic coloring effect is obtained. Print quality largely depends on the paper used. Good quality paper absorbs just about the right amount of ink thus giving the print a glossy and shiny appeal.
